Can I still call myself a travel blogger when I don’t travel?

My life these days is pretty ordinary. I go to work. I cook dinner. I watch T.V. I sleep. For the last three years I’ve been living a very typical lifestyle in my home town in Taranaki, New Zealand.

Aside from a short excursion to Thailand and Myanmar late last year, my international travel plans have been sparse. There are no trips planned, nor spontaneous weekends away for us. This year has been one of the least travelled years of my life. Even my thirtieth birthday earlier this year was quiet with a little trip up north to Napier and Lake Waikeremoana.

There’s a reason for the lack of travel, of course, Jack and I are looking to place roots. We want to buy a home and to do so, we need to save some serious dough. We’re tired of paying rent, dealing with landlords and house inspections, and of being unable to own a dog.

There was a time when renting suited us well. We could work overseas and leave when we liked. For most of my twenties I would work in a town for a year and then quit and go live somewhere else. While hugely exciting at first, I feel a bit fatigued by the whole thing these days. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve boomeranged back to my parents’ home while I found a new place to live.

So this year will be a slow one and I feel the travel itch every other day. But this is only a temporary blip. Once I have a more permanent home base set up (and a fair bit of annual leave accumulated) I’ll be back to travelling more regularly next year.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to blog and build up the content on this site - there’s still a lot that I’ve yet to write about. One of the reasons I started this blog was to encourage others to travel too, so I’d like to think that you guys are travelling on my behalf these days.

Can I still call myself a travel blogger? I hope so.
