Finding Wellington

You can see Wellington in the kite surfers tumbling in the strong winds.
You can smell Wellington in the spicy fragrance wafting down Cuba Street.
You can feel Wellington by running your hands over the cool stone ball in Te Papa’s entrance way.
You can hear Wellington in the abrupt splash of the iconic bucket fountain.
You can taste Wellington in a flat white at the local café.

The capital of New Zealand gave us the usual welcome of wild winds and a sun buried in clouds so we retreated into Te Papa museum to be blown away by Weta Workshop’s Gallipoli exhibition instead.

With the sun on display the next day we ventured up Mt Vic to the lookout and watched the tuis flit among the flax bushes while a busy Friday in Wellington flowed below us.

I’ve lived in Wellington for a couple of years in the past and I thought I could write a guide. I thought I knew this city. Yet the more I see of this tiny capital, the more I see that I don’t know it at all and there’s still more to discover.
I feel I could live in Wellington all my life and still unearth new treasures.
