New Zealand in December

It’s stupidly hot here at the moment. I’m averaging two popsicles a day trying to keep cool. We took a road trip around the North Island last week and I’d forgotten that its peak season for tourism here. I think I much prefer New Zealand in spring or autumn when it’s quieter and cooler.

What Happened in December: I spent a day driving the Forgotten World Highway to the quirky town of Whangamomona, located right out in the wop wops (NZ slang for middle of nowhere). I celebrated a kiwi style Christmas and took some serene photographs of Taranaki’s coastal walkway – among my favourite photos to date. Then right at the end of the month I headed out on a road trip to Rotorua and hiked the difficult Tongariro Crossing. Phew!

Blog Updates: I’ve changed the layout of my New Zealand travel page, my growing resource for NZ travel, take a look!

What I’m doing in January: I have no idea! Maybe climb Mt Taranaki while I’m on an adventurous roll.
