Rotorua.

Rotorua, despite being on the dream New Zealand itinerary for most, has not inspired me to write a post and the only reason I’m writing this at all is to show you that destinations may not live up to your expectations.

I was bored in Rotorua. Maybe it was because I’ve been before, some 15 years ago, maybe it was the packaged tourism and the feeling of being herded like sheep from one geyser to the next, maybe because I’ve grown up around Maori culture and the dinner with show packages don’t interest me and seemed unauthentic compared to the everyday Maori culture that I know. I may even have been a little tired after hiking the Tongariro Crossing and ready to rest in my own home.

I’m sorry, but if you only have a few weeks to experience all that New Zealand can give, keep your Rotorua trip short, and go elsewhere in NZ – somewhere with cultural depth.
